Christine Deacon is a writer and artist who lives on Mount Tamborine, behind Queensland’s Gold Coast. She has written several books including `Australia Down Under’ about Australia’s underwater world. A little more about me. I did my degree at Macquarie University as a mature aged student and specialised in Science and graduated among the first science graduates from there in 1981. I then went into publishing working as science editor on The Australian Encyclopaedia 4th edition published in 1983. I worked on the Planet of Minerals Gallery at The Australian Museum, after coming back from 8 months overseas travelling by camper van through Europe. It was the second time I’d worked at the Museum firstly in marine science for Elizabeth Pope and then in publications and on Mineral Gallery Project Team. I was there when `Australia Down Under’ was published and Robyn Williams agreed to do the preface.
Earlier with my husband Kevin Deacon I had helped run a diving business and had been on a Pepperdine University Project Ocean Search Wuvulu New Guinea, where I met Jean Michael Cousteau. It was there, in the 1970’s that I had decided to go to university.
IN 1991 I met the Aboriginal elder Guboo, who predicted I was going walkabout. Within six months, I had a job with the Supervising Scientist and went to Jabiru, in Kakadu National Park, where I worked on publications on uranium mining. Whilst there I met Aboriginal elder and author Bill Neidjie. He said we were doing this (writing) for his grandson Greg and my daughter Tamara for their future. He had presented a paper for a Conference which I was editing.
Later I worked in TAFE for 5 years teaching communications. In 1996 I decided to travel around Australia by campervan and in the next year, moved to Tamborine Mountain.
